ICY Kenya incorporates Praise Youth Ministries which was set up in 2002 by Peter Abungu to reach and disciple young people in Kenya, and train youth ministers.

The Work of PYM

PYM was established just four years ago but has already made a big impact on youth ministry. It is unique in many ways. It is totally African led, seeks to be self sufficient, not reliant on western funding, and is genuinely non-denominational but committed to local church. Its primary emphases are evangelism and discipleship of youth, with a particular concern to train emerging leaders to be Biblical, servant hearted and kingdom minded. To this end a core value is partnership in order to be most effective and make the greatest impact with limited resources.

PYM is led by Peter Abungu together with a core team and wider team of volunteers based in Nairobi. The team meets most days to pray, plan and study the Bible. They then go out to schools, orphanages and churches across Nairobi. They attempt to take on a special mission every month. This may be a local mission in the nearby villages or to help their partner works in Tanzania and Uganda. PYM also run camps, and as their name suggests have a strong music and creative arts team.

New in 2004 was the Bible Teachers training course. With a view to training young Bible Teachers the course is accredited by International Christian Youth Ministries, and consists of five modules, Bible, Doctrine, Personal Discipleship, Christian Leadership and a Catch All. It consists of 180 hours of lectures and is evaluated by assignments and a portfolio. Successful students will need to complete all the lectures offered in five block periods over a year. Ultimately graduates will be trained to teach others, with a vision that over a five year period 1000 emerging leaders will be trained to be Biblical visionary servants.
In November 2005 the first Bible Teachers graduated and in 2006 they trained a larger group of their peers themselves. It is hoped over the years to train thousands of leaders to impact this beautiful country.

PYM also engages in a regular program of schools evangelism, camps, and other forms of youth ministry, including partnering orphanages and schools in the Kabera slums where they seek to bring the love of Christ to the poorest young people.

Visiting PYM
Peter and the team welcome visitors, be they individuals or small groups, coming for two weeks or two years. If you have a group wanting to visit, then the ICY Africa Director, Denis Kigongo, can organise your visit from start to finish, through the ICY partner, www.real-africa.co.uk. For more details click here

Individuals or groups of 2-4 people can visit for just a few weeks or stay for a few months or even years. Basically you just join the team, living in the ICY Kenya house in Nairobi, and working alongside the team in all they do. If you cover your airfares and visa to Kenya, the team will pick you up from the airport, and cover all your costs from there, for the nominal cost of $180 per week for short visits, and $375 a month for longer visits. This includes your accommodation, food, and your work travel and costs around Kampala. We aim to have four visitors on what we call our Ministry Support Team working alongside the Praise Youth Ministries staff and volunteers, and can pretty much take on visitors at any time for any period, providing we have room in the house. We also aim to use your gifts to the full so would seek to devise a program to suit you! Basically we try to be as flexible as possible to give you the very best experience we possibly can.
